Register a stillbirth or death of a newborn
If you suffer a stillbirth in Redbridge, please contact us to make an appointment. We’ll make every effort to find an appointment that is convenient for you.
You’ll need to register a stillbirth within 42 days.

What you need to know
The doctor or midwife will send a medical certificate of stillbirth directly to us.
If the stillbirth has been reported to the Coroner’s Office they will advise you what to do.
Who can register a stillbirth?
If the parents are married or in a civil partnership
- the mother can register alone
- the father or second parent can register alone
- both parents can attend together but only one parent can register
If the parents are not married or in a civil partnership
- both parents must register together for both to be included on the certificate
- the mother can register alone but the father or second partent will not be included on the certificate
- The father or second parent cannot attend alone
What you need to bring
It would be useful for you to bring:
- your passport or birth certificate
- proof of your current address
It’s okay if you do not have these documents. But if you do, it’ll help to ensure that the registration is completed accurately.
Documents you’ll receive
You’ll be given:
- a certificate of registration of stillbirth
- a certificate for burial or cremation (‘white form’) so you can arrange the funeral
Request a baby loss certificate
If your pregnancy ends before 24 weeks, you can get a certificate in memory of your baby. It’s free to get a certificate.
You do not need to request a certificate if you prefer not to. It’s optional.
