Second homes and annexes
Most second or additional homes are charged the full amount of council tax. But there are sometimes discounts for annexes and second homes related to your job.
Second homes
If you’ve to live in a second home for your job, you can get a 50% discount for it.
There must be a direct link between your work and the property. For example you're a caretaker, landlord of a pub or schoolmaster.
You cannot get a single person discount for your second home. You can only claim it for your main residence.
Who can apply?
You can get discount if:
- you live in and pay council tax for a property which your employer needs you to occupy
- you're responsible for council tax on a second furnished property
You cannot get a discount if your second home is:
- just to shorten your journey to work
- a holiday home
- used for personal convenience

You'll need:
- your council tax reference number
- evidence from your employer confirming your second home is related to your job
