Appeal a Council Tax Reduction decision
When we make a decision about your Council Tax Reduction, we’ll send you this in writing. You should read this carefully.
If you disagree with the decision, you can ask us to look at it again.
Who can appeal a decision?
Explanations or disputes about Council Tax Reduction can only be requested by:
- the person claiming
- someone appointed by the claimant or someone with power of attorney to act on their behalf
If you disagree with our decision
You can ask us to:
- explain our decision in more detail
- reconsider our decision
- make an appeal

You can ask us to explain our decision. We can provide a more detailed explanation verbally or in writing. You must ask for this within one month of you being notified of the decision.
You have a further month from the date we reply to ask us to look at the decision again or to appeal.
Ask us to reconsider our decision
You can ask us to reconsider our decision if you think we’ve made a mistake or have new information that might change this.
You must ask for this within one month of you being notified of the decision.
We’ll advise you in writing whether the decision has been changed or if it'll stay the same.
If the decision remains the same, you have one month to appeal the decision.
Make an appeal
We do not deal with appeals against Council Tax Reduction.
You should ask us to review our decision again before you make an appeal.
If you still want to appeal a Council Tax Reduction decision after our review, you must contact the Valuation Tribunal Service.
The Valuation Tribunal will not accept an appeal that has been set by a local authority.
