Pay your council tax
When to pay
You must pay by the 4th of each month unless you pay by Direct Debit.
Your council tax will be split into 10 monthly payments. But this can be extended to 12 months from April to March.
If you choose this option later in the year, your payments will be extended only until March.
You need your council tax reference number
You need your council tax reference number to pay your council tax bill. Your number will be:
- either 8 or 11 digits long
- start with 4
The number for your council tax account is:
- on your council tax bill
- in recent emails or text messages from us
- in your online council tax account, if you’ve registered for one
Your council tax reference number will be in your online account if you’ve already registered and entered your council tax number.

Ask us to send you your council tax reference number
Pay online
You can pay by credit or debit card.
Set up a Direct Debit
Direct Debit is the quickest and easiest way to pay your council tax. It means you can:
- pay over 12 months instead of the usual 10
- you pay automatically each month on the day you choose
You’ll need your bank account number and sort code.
Online banking
When you’re paying into Redbridge council’s account, use:
- sort code: 57 96 51
- account number: 00000000 (that’s 8 zeros)
- reference: your council tax reference number
Pay by phone
Call 020 8708 4708 to pay by credit or debit card.
You can call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
You’ll need to know:
- your council tax reference number
- how much you need to pay
- your card details
We accept:
- Visa
- Visa Debit
- MasterCard
Text Relay
You should dial 18001 and then 020 8708 4708 to pay by Text Relay.
Pay in-person
You can pay your council tax at the post office or at a PayPoint.
You’ll need your payment barcode which is on the back of your paper bill.
Ask for a paper copy of your council tax bill
At the post office
You can pay using cash up to £300.
You can pay up to £999.99 using:
- cheques
- card
At a PayPoint
You can pay using cash up to £200.
