The impressive Eastbury Manor House, owned by the National Trust, was built by Clement Sysley, a rich Essex merchant, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and completed around 1573. The house, which stands in 1.5 acres of peaceful walled garden, contains early 17th-century wall-paintings depicting fishing scenes and in the former Great Chamber there is a wonderful cityscape. Fascinating features include exposed timbers in the attic, a fine original spiral oak staircase in turret, soaring chimneys and cobbled courtyard. The building has been developed as an arts heritage and community resource where school visits take place.
