The Royal Observatory in Greenwich was originally founded in 1675 to observe and record the movement of heavenly bodies in an attempt to solve the longitude problem by the lunar distance method. The building was designed by Wren and the work was overseen by Hooke. The Observatory was built on the highest ground in Greenwich Park, and had rooms especially for the appointed astronomer, John Flamsteed and his assistant. Flamsteed worked on the project for over forty years and his star catalogue was published following his death in 1725.
