Redbridge residents help catch local fly-tipper landing him with hefty court fines

A Redbridge man who illegally dumped large amounts of rubbish on the borough’s streets over several months was brought to justice thanks to the help of local witnesses and Redbridge Enforcement Officers.

Nicu Ilie from Seven Kings was handed a court imposed fine and costs totalling £1,254 after being found guilty of four counts of fly-tipping.

He was linked to four separate fly-tipping incidents in the borough, which occurred over a period of seven months, in New Road - adjacent to where he lived in Clandon Road.

Following a detailed investigation by Redbridge Enforcement Officers and statements from three eagle-eyed local witnesses who came forward to describe the fly-tipper and the vehicle used to discard the waste, the council was able to identify Ilie as the culprit.

Ilie was summonsed to Barkingside Magistrates Court but in the meantime, he moved addresses and also returned to Romania.  After his non-appearance at court, a warrant for his arrest was issued and on his return to the UK in March 2022, he was arrested.

Ilie appeared at Barkingside Magistrates Court on Tuesday 26 April and pleaded guilty to four charges of fly-tipping. He was sentenced to fines, court and council costs totalling £1,254.

Sarah Foster, Redbridge Council’s Operational Director for Civic Pride, said: “Dumping rubbish on the streets creates a health and safety hazard, brings our communities down and makes our neighbourhoods unpleasant, and Redbridge Council will not tolerate this kind of selfish behaviour.

“This latest successful prosecution stems from local witnesses coming forward and working with our council enforcement teams to bring fly-tippers to justice and should send a clear message to potential offenders that as a community we won’t put up with people making a mess in our borough.”

The prosecution is part of a range of initiatives being deployed by the council to tackle fly-tipping in Redbridge, which also recently included the launch of Redbridge Wall of Shame – a new microsite dedicated to identifying culprits caught on camera dumping their trash on the borough’s streets and committing other environmental crimes.

Local people are being encouraged to view the footage and share any information that may help identify the culprits in the footage to help keep Redbridge clean and tidy.

All fly tips made known to the council are recorded and investigated, with enforcement action being taken if evidence is found. The council aims to clear all recorded fly-tips on council land and the highway within 24 hours of it being reported.
