Industrial action called off: statement from Leader of Redbridge Council

Published: 22 August 2024

The Leader of Redbridge Council, Cllr Kam Rai, has issued the following statement.

I’m pleased to say that the planned industrial action by refuse and waste collection staff at Redbridge Civic Services (RCS), has been called off and a settlement accepted.

Last week, I met with shop stewards and staff at Redbridge Civic Services (RCS), who employ the waste and refuse collection operatives in Redbridge, to discuss their employment dispute. It was a productive meeting as we spoke candidly about the needs of the workers and also how important it is that the residents of Redbridge can be served well.

I was also clear that the staff and their work is valued by all of us, as is RCS remaining successful - demonstrating that completely outsourcing services is not always the answer.

Since the dispute began, the Council has worked to facilitate discussions and negotiations between RCS management, local shop stewards, and Unite the Union to get a fair offer for the workers and try to prevent industrial action.

RCS has offered an extensive support package, which RCS has told us was well-received by its workers. This morning, the workers were balloted, and the offer has been accepted.

I will ensure we continue to facilitate dialogue between local front line staff, the RCS  management and the Council to iron out any difficulties and misunderstandings. There will always be challenges in what is a tough environment, but it’s important genuine concerns are acted upon in good faith.

When collecting waste each week from thousands of households, there will inevitably be times when a collection is missed.
