Delivery of £6600 fine for pizza shop that dumped its waste in local people’s bins

Published: 14 December 2023

An Ilford business that dumped its commercial waste into local people’s bins was successfully prosecuted for fly-tipping under action by Redbridge Council to keep the borough clean and tidy.

The majority of local businesses help keep the neighbourhoods they serve tidy by disposing of their commercial waste properly, so when Redbridge Enforcement Officers were alerted to reports of commercial waste being found in residential bins, they were soon on the case to track down the culprits.

Perth Road based business, Pizza GoGo - the trading name for Minahil Ltd – was identified as the perpetrator behind several fly-tipping incidents affecting residents living near the takeaway shop.

Redbridge Council’s Enforcement Team were first alerted to the issue after local people complained about rubbish and the misuse of council bins in Frinton Mews, which were intended for resident use.

On arriving at the location to investigate, Enforcement Officers found large quantities of sealed black waste sacks, cardboard boxes and Pizza GoGo branded packaging in council bins allocated to nearby flat owners for their household waste.

Contents of the sealed waste sacks also revealed empty catering sized cans of black olives, sauces, Pizza GoGo packaging, flour sacks, food order delivery tickets and kitchen waste – all traced back to the nearby Pizza GoGo takeaway shop.

Further evidence of fly-tipping in residential bins was compiled against the takeaway shop following several return visits to the area by Enforcment Officers, leading to Minahil Ltd receiving five Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs), of £400 each, for fly-tipping.

After failing to pay the FPNs, Minahil Ltd was summonsed to appear at Barkingside Magistrates Court, charged with five offences of fly-tipping. The company entered pleas of ‘not guilty’ and on Tuesday 5 December, evidence was heard on behalf of the Council, and from Zeeshan Safvi, General Manager of Pizza GoGo, on behalf of Minahil Ltd.

Having considered all the evidence, the Magistrates found all five fly-tipping charges against Minahil Ltd proved. The company was fined and ordered to pay Court and Council costs totalling £6,600.

Redbridge Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, Cllr Khayer Chowdhury, said: “We all have a responsibility to ensure our streets and neighbourhoods are clean, and that includes businesses. Fly-tipping commercial waste on our streets and into the bins of innocent residents is unacceptable. We all need to work together to make sure Redbridge is clean and pleasant, and this prosecution is a testament to our commitment to holding rule breakers to account for their behaviour.”

Businesses are required by law to dispose of their commercial waste using a registered trade waste carrier. For more information go to: https://www.redbridge.gov.uk/bins-waste-and-recycling/commercial-and-trade-waste/
