Redbridge Council gets agreement on revised operating hours for Woodford Avenue bus lane

Published: 21 December 2024

Following a series of productive meetings between the Leader of Redbridge Council and London transport chiefs, it has been agreed that the Woodford Avenue bus lane will now operate during the early morning and early evening rush hour periods.

This change aims to minimise disruption to local residents while maintaining efficient public transport services.

The Leader of Redbridge Council, Cllr Kam Rai, met with the Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance, and TfL officials to discuss several pressing matters concerning transport in Redbridge, including the new Woodford Avenue bus lane.

The bus lane operates on Woodford Avenue in both directions, between the junctions of Longwood Gardens and Redbridge Lane East roundabout and the junction of Clayhall Avenue.

Subject to formal processes, the Woodford Avenue bus lane will resume operation in the new year with revised operating hours of 7am to 10am and 4pm and 7pm, Monday through Friday, rather than 24/7 as initially proposed.

The Leader of Redbridge Council, Cllr Kam Rai, said: "As a local resident, I know the impact changes to the road network can have on our neighbours, and we are committed to ensuring they can go about their busy lives with as little disruption as possible.

“I know local people, particularly in the surrounding areas, had concerns about the initial installation and operating times of the bus lane, and we engaged with our community on the improvements we could work towards. That’s why we met the Deputy Mayor and senior TfL officials to discuss improving the Woodford Avenue bus lane.

"I'm pleased to confirm they have listened to our concerns, meaning the bus lane will operate only during the early morning and early evening rush hour periods, meaning no restrictions are in place for the best part of the day and weekends. This has been a collective effort between TfL, us, and residents, with a positive outcome that balances the needs of public transport and other road users.”
