Funding to help supercharge Redbridge's electric vehicle network

Published: 19 January 2022

Redbridge Council will strengthen its bid to become carbon-zero by 2030 by installing 310 electric vehicle charge points across the borough.

The London Borough of Redbridge has secured £557,610 from the Office for Zero Emission's On-street Residential Chargepoint Scheme, which funds 75% of the capital costs of the charge points.

The remaining 25% will be financed by the council, a commercial partner or a part-funding agreement, reaching a total project value of £0.8 million.

310 slow / lamp post electric vehicle (EV) charge points will be installed across Redbridge by the end of March 2023, with feedback from residents helping to determine the locations of the on-street charge points. This will increase the availability of plug-in vehicle charging infrastructure for those residents who do not have access to off-street parking.

Redbridge currently provides 59 publicly available charge points throughout the borough. The On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme is funded by Office for Zero-Emission Vehicles (OZEV) and administered by the Energy Saving Trust.

Councillor Jo Blackman, Cabinet Member for Environment and Civic Pride, said:

"We're on the cusp of something really exciting with the prospect of the electric vehicle revolution. What's vital is that we have the proper infrastructure to ensure there are no barriers to people using electric vehicles.

"The installation of these charge points will provide easy access to people, where off-street parking is not an option for them. As more residents move to more environmentally-friendly travel, communities will inevitably benefit from improved air quality and lower their carbon footprint."

Councillor Jas Athwal, Leader of Redbridge Council, said:

“We're bringing 310 new on-street charge points to Redbridge, making it even easier for those without access to a driveway to charge across the borough. Not only will Redbridge's expanding charging network help accelerate the switch to electric vehicles, but it will also help to improve our local air quality.”

Transport Minister Trudy Harrison said:

"As we head full speed towards a greener transport future, we want to make it as easy as possible for people to charge their electric vehicles.

"That's why I'm pleased our £20m On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme is supporting the London Borough of Redbridge in offering accessible and reliable charging infrastructure to its residents."
