Holocaust Memorial Day service – Thursday, 27 January

Published: 25 January 2022

Redbridge Council is inviting residents to come together to commemorate those who have lost their lives to genocide at a virtual Holocaust Memorial Day event on Thursday, 27 January at 11am.

The service is an opportunity for local people across Redbridge to remember those who died in the Holocaust as we mark the 77th anniversary of the liberation of the former Nazi concentration and extermination camp, Auschwitz Birkenau, and to remember those who have lost their lives in subsequent genocides in Bosnia, Cambodia, Rwanda, Kosovo and Darfur.

An estimated six million Jews were killed during the Holocaust, and at least another five million people are estimated to have been killed during the Holocaust on account of their faith, ethnicity, sexuality or political beliefs.

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2022 is ‘One Day’. Redbridge Council and partners are calling on local communities to put aside One Day to think about those who perished under the brutal Nazi regime, and in other genocides across the world.

The service will feature several speakers, including:

  • The Mayor of Redbridge
  • The Leader of Redbridge Council, Cllr Jas Athwal
  • Local faith leaders

Cllr Jas Athwal, Leader of Redbridge Council, said: "Holocaust Memorial Day is a chance for us all to come together – whatever our background, belief or religion– to remember and pay respect to those that lost their lives during the Holocaust, and to commemorate those that have been taken from us in subsequent genocides around the world.

"We stand with our Jewish neighbours and friends to remember the suffering that their communities faced during the Holocaust as a result of unchecked antisemitism. This One Day is a chance to reflect on the fatal and devastating impact that hatred has had on communities around the world, and to look forward with hope as we stand together against racism, antisemitism, Islamophobia and all forms of hatred and bigotry.”

Tune into Thursday's service here.
