Redbridge restaurant goes for seconds after landing back in court again over grime crime offences

Published: 11 July 2023

An Ilford restaurant that repeatedly failed to store its commercial waste properly, leaving rubbish spilling on to the street, has been successfully prosecuted by Redbridge Council for a second time.

Salamis on Cranbrook Road, was known to the Council’s Enforcement Team following on-going issues relating to the storage of its commercial waste.

The restaurant had been placed on the council’s watchlist after being issued Section 47 legal notices under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (EPA), which makes specific requirements as to how commercial waste should be stored.

During compliance checks last year, Redbridge Enforcement Officers discovered commercial waste bins belonging to the restaurant open and overflowing with rubbish, in breach of its legal notice. They also found waste gathered by the bins, along with boxes and oil drums left on the ground liable to attract vermin, such as rats and mice.

Restaurant owner and company director, Remzi Savas, aged 41, was issued with three fixed penalty notices (FPNs) as a result. The FPNs remained unpaid despite reminder letters being sent - eventually leading to court action against him for the second time within three months.

Savas, was summonsed to court on 3 charges of failing to comply with the EPA Notice. After failing to attend Barkingside Magistrates Court on Tuesday 4 July 2023, the case against him was heard and proved in his absence, landing Savas with fines as well as court and council costs totalling £4,189.

The court heard that Savas had also been convicted in April at the same court for six similar offences, for which he’d been fined and ordered to pay court and council costs totalling £1,160.

Redbridge Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, Cllr Khayer Chowdhury, said: “We all have a duty to keep our borough clean and tidy, and this includes businesses. The failure to correctly store commercial waste presents a threat to the environment and public health. We will not tolerate businesses behaving badly in our borough and will continue taking tough action against those businesses who refuse to act responsibly and legally when disposing of their waste.”
