Donation drive to support children during the summer holidays

Published: 16 June 2023

Redbridge Council and a Wanstead charity, Tin in a Bin, are launching a new campaign to help raise money to ensure children and young people don't go hungry during the summer holidays.

The Council and Tin in Bin recently raised over £4,000 to support 350 children during the Easter holidays and are launching a new summer campaign to build on this vital work.

The fundraising campaign aims to provide children who don't qualify for free school meals but are struggling with the cost of living with food boxes containing ingredients and recipes for meals that can be made together as a family.

This will provide them with healthy, homemade meals when schools are closed for summer and is in addition to supporting the families eligible for free school meal vouchers.

The aim is to raise at least £30,000, which will help 350 children across Redbridge, with a donation of £15 helping fund a child each week during the summer holidays.

Cllr Jas Athwal, Leader of Redbridge Council, said: "Over the past year, we have issued 75,000 free school meal vouchers to families to make sure local children never go hungry during the school holidays.

"This fantastic scheme will provide additional and much-needed support to hard-pressed families who do not qualify for free school meals and are struggling to put food on the table. It will help ensure that some of our most vulnerable children don't go hungry this summer. Please give what you can to this worthy cause; every penny helps."

Please provide donations via the Go Fund page.

There will be a number of events in the borough to help raise money for this important cause. Please get in touch with tinab.wanstead@gmail.com or Suzanne Wright (suzanne.wright@redbridge.gov.uk) at Redbridge Council for further details.
