New sensory playground set to open in Ilford this summer

Published: 21 March 2022

A new sensory playground with climbing equipment, musical chimes and a story-telling area has been given the go-ahead by Redbridge Council.

The playground will provide families with early years children, including those with special educational needs and disabilities, with space to play and interact with other children.

Work on the sensory playground on the site of the Loxford Leisure Centre in Ilford will begin in May with the planned opening in the Summer this year.

During the school day, the playground will be a facility for the neighbouring Pre-school. During the evenings, weekends and holidays it will be open to the whole community.

The proposals for this valuable community asset were developed by Redbridge Council alongside Loxford School, Vision RCL and the Loxford First Step Pre-school.

The new playground, installed by Pentagon Play, will have:

  • Soft play surfacing across the entire site
  • New fencing to enclose the space
  • Climbing equipment
  • Musical chimes
  • Sensory panels and a sensory spinner
  • Benches and a storytelling area
