Resident tip-offs help Redbridge Council crack down on grime crime offenders

Published: 10 March 2022

Redbridge residents are joining the fight against fly-tipping by reporting illegally dumped rubbish, leading to targeted council action.

Thanks to tip-offs from residents the council was able to identify a fly-tip hotspot in Ilford, leading to targeted operations involving enforcement and community engagement work.

Eagle-eyed residents spotting dumped rubbish on Cleveland Road by the junction of Grange Road and have been alerting the council, resulting in council enforcement officers investigating the fly-tips to try and identify the culprits behind the mess. More than 20 fly-tips have been cleared at the site since the start of the year. The mountains of mess have included food waste and furniture.

As part of the targeted operation the council is using CCTV in the area to catch the mess making culprits red-handed.

The council’s Neighbourhood Team were also out in force engaging with the local community to gather any resident concerns and offer advice on waste disposal and recycling.

The team visited 170 properties offering face to face advice, or posting waste disposal information through letterboxes if residents were unavailable, in addition to giving out recycling boxes and checking rental properties they visited had adequate waste receptacles in place.

Community action also led to a patch of land on Cleveland road being spruced up by members of the VHP Ilford Temple. The volunteers have been working with the Council’s Trees, and Neighbourhood Team to adopt and transform the space, which is now flourishing with plants thanks to community teamwork.

Residents are being encouraged to keep reporting any fly-tipping incidents they see in the borough to help keep neighbourhoods tidy and support the council in cracking down of those who make a mess of the borough. This can be done through the council’s Report it page, which enables residents to make a report quickly and easily, and attach images of the fly-tip:  https://www.redbridge.gov.uk/report-it/

All fly tips made known to the council are recorded and investigated, with enforcement action being taken if evidence is found. The council aims to clear all recorded fly-tips within 24 hours of it being reported.

As part of its Our Streets strategy, and on-going work to create a cleaner and greener Redbridge, the council is taking a tough stance on grime crime and will fine or prosecute any individual or business caught dumping rubbish on the street.

Enforcement action is being coupled alongside other on-going council initiatives to tackle fly-tipping across the borough, including anti-illegal dumping campaigns encouraging behaviour change, community engagement work, free online workshops on reducing and disposing of waste properly, and regular joint patrols between the council’s Street Cleansing Team and Enforcement Officers to tackle fly-tip hot spots around the borough.
