Redbridge Council wins funding to help local people live well in social care settings

Published: 21 March 2024

Redbridge Council has successfully bid for a £1 million grant to roll out innovative care technology which can prevent falls and automatically alert carers to a medical issue.

As part of the programme, Redbridge will select innovative care technologies and test them in several care settings, including reablement, care homes, and extra care.

Some of the technologies being considered include using 4D mapping technology to track movement and detect falls through sensors placed around the home. Pilots using similar care technology in two care homes resulted in a 66% reduction in falls and around a 97.5% reduction in ambulances called or required post-fall, reducing pressure on the NHS and protecting vulnerable residents.

Redbridge, in partnership with North East London Integrated Care Board (NEL ICB), Public Health, and Care City CIC, will be at the forefront of using new technology to keep local residents safe and well at care settings across the borough. The work will be evaluated and help inform a wider rollout of the technology.

Adrian Loades, Interim Chief Executive at Redbridge Council said “Our brilliant Adult Social Care teams are working hard to support local people to live longer, healthier lives. By spearheading the use of innovative technology, we can help people live independently for longer and reduce pressure on our NHS. By working in partnership with NEL ICB, Public Health and Care City our council is helping deliver the best possible care for our neighbours.”

Matt Skinner, CEO at Care City CIC, a local social enterprise, said, “This is an amazing opportunity for residents in Redbridge to benefit from innovative care technology. We are delighted to bring our local experience to support Redbridge Council in delivering this important work, which aligns closely with our Mission to enable healthier, happier lives for the people of North East London.

The £1 million funding was granted by the Government’s Adult Social Care Technology Fund, following a bid submitted by Redbridge Council, NEL ICB, Public Health and innovation partner Care City.
