Leader's message 28 March 2025
Published: 28 March 2025
Spring has sprung, and it's been wonderful to enjoy warmer weather and lighter evenings across our borough. Over the past fortnight, I've been on the doorsteps continuing to meet with residents, local businesses, and community groups, hearing directly from you about your priorities and ideas for Redbridge.
This week’s Spring Statement offered positive steps for the country's economic outlook, including important measures to support more people into secure work. However, we would like to see more targeted funding directed towards local authorities. Additional investment is vital to ensure we can continue delivering the excellent service that you rightly expect from us. We'll keep advocating for a fairer funding settlement to ensure Redbridge receives the support we need.
Last week's Full Council Meeting was a valuable opportunity to discuss key issues affecting Redbridge, including the measures we’d like to see the government take to combat problem gambling, and the pressure we’re putting on Thames Water to clean up the River Roding and the Alders Brook.
Earlier this week I visited Frenford Clubs to see the excellent work that they’re doing for our young people in the borough, and their exciting expansion plans. We’re lucky to have an organisation like Frenford in the borough, open seven days a week providing a vital third space for young people and mentoring. The centre also offers a food bank for those that need it, and are always seeking donations. If you think you can help, please do contact Frenford directly.
Today, I'm excited to visit the new mural on Ilford Lane, a fantastic piece of art showcasing our borough's vibrant creativity, community spirit and history.
The Easter holidays are approaching, and our MegaMix programme offers a fantastic range of free and affordable activities for children and young people across Redbridge. From sports and arts workshops to outdoor adventures, there’s something for everyone. Spaces are filling quickly, so please book soon to secure your places.
As we prepare for warmer months and VE Day, remember to register your street parties early. These gatherings help build community spirit and provide wonderful opportunities to celebrate together. Another quick reminder that our green garden waste collections are shortly back in action; please ensure your garden waste is ready for collection on your scheduled dates from 7th April.
We're proud to be London's most efficient borough council, but there's always more to do. Your continued support and vigilance in reporting issues via the Love Clean Streets App, or our online Report It page is essential in keeping Redbridge a safe, clean, and welcoming community.
