Tackling poverty whilst building a cleaner, greener, fairer, and healthier borough will be priorities for Redbridge Council over the next four years.
In his annual address, Cllr Jas Athwal, the Leader of Redbridge Council, said despite the difficulties posed by the cost-of-living crisis and cuts to the council’s budget, he was determined to deliver improvements that benefit everyone.
Speaking at the first full council meeting of this year, which begins the new administration’s four-year term, he praised people and communities across Redbridge for how they responded to the pandemic and said that working together was how Redbridge would prosper.
He said: “Over the next four years, we will work with local people, businesses, and partners to continue transforming our borough and ensuring a bright future for everyone who lives here. We have a clear vision for our borough to make Redbridge the best place to live, work, raise a family, and call home.”
Other highlights of the first full council meeting of this municipal year included the appointment of Cllr Thavathuray Jeyaranjan as Mayor and Cllr Namreen Chaudhry as Deputy Mayor of Redbridge.
They have selected two health causes to be their charities for the mayoral year.
One Place East, an Ilford-based charity, provides high-quality, wide-ranging services and promotes equality and inclusion for disabled people, people with lived experience of mental health issues, long term conditions and people with a learning disability and autism.
King George and Queen’s Hospitals Charity raises funds to make a real difference to patients, their families and the staff who treat them by supplying extras not covered by the NHS.
There were also warm tributes to outgoing Mayor Cllr Roy Emmett, who has also retired from politics.
