Published: 7 December 2023

The Hainault Forest Restoration Project has been nominated as a 2024 Regional Finalist for the Civic Trust Awards. Having recently undergone a £7 million refurbishment , Vision Redbridge and The London Borough of Redbridge worked in partnership with the Woodland Trust to improve facilities across the park and make a more engaging visitor experience.

The restoration included a complete renovation of the Victorian barns and the creation of the Woodlands Trust Visitors Centre event space, a café, artist workshops, a children’s playground and animal farm and changing places toilet facilities,  the project is also one of thirteen schemes nominated for an additional Selwyn Goldsmith Awards for Universal Design.

Universal design schemes demonstrate a high standard of accessibility and sustainability, while contributing to the quality and appearance of their surroundings. This award recognises places that are responsive, flexible, welcoming, and easy to use and occupy. They allow everyone to enjoy them with dignity and equality.

The finalists, which includes Hainault Forest, have been announced, and winners will be congratulated in March 2024.

This is on the back of Redbridge being the only borough to be awarded the Green Apple Award for Environmental Improvement Sector, National Gold Winner.

Cllr Jas Athwal, Leader of Redbridge Council said:  With Hainault Forest recently voted as one of the top ten parks in the country, we are extremely proud to receive further recognition for the recent restoration of Hainaut Forest.  The brand-new playground, indoor activity space, visitor centre, workshops and newly renovated Foxburrows Farm are all about putting families first. These restoration works have preserved Hainault Forest so local people and visitors can enjoy the country park not just now, but for generations to come.”

Chair of Vision Trustees Martin Solder said: "The completion of Hainault Forest Restoration Project has transformed Hainault Forest into one of top destinations in Redbridge for those who love nature. Selected as a 2024 Civic Trust Awards Regional Finalist, it serves as a powerful example of partnership led restoration, Vision RCL, Redbridge Council and Woodland Trust worked tirelessly together to preserve the environment and leave a long-lasting legacy for further generations to enjoy."
