people clearing fly-tips

Fly-tipping patrols are digging up dirt on those dumping rubbish in Redbridge

Published: 10 October 2023

Redbridge Council is taking targeted action to find the grime crime offenders creating untidy neighbourhoods around the borough by selfishly dumping their rubbish on the street.

As part of the borough’s tough stance against fly-tipping, Redbridge Council Enforcement Officers teamed up with their colleagues in Street Cleansing for a morning of action in fly-tipping hotspot zones in the south of the borough.

This was in addition to the regular patrols carried out across the borough by the teams.

Enforcement Officers investigated the piles of rubbish to track down the culprits behind the mess, before the borough’s Street Cleansing crew cleared the fly-tips off the street.

A metal bin, large fan, large cushions, and cardboard boxes were among the items found illegally dumped on the street, creating pathway obstructions for local people, and leaving neighbourhoods looking messy.

The Enforcement Team have already identified and issued a £400 fine to a company for dumping 16 bags of builders’ waste on Thompson Close, Ilford.

Further evidence is being analysed to identify the lawbreakers behind the other fly-tips discovered on the day.

Redbridge Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, Cllr Khayer Chowdhury, said: “Dumping rubbish and wrecking our environment is a criminal offence, and we won’t tolerate it as a community.  It brings our borough down. We all have a responsibility to keep Redbridge clean and tidy by disposing of our rubbish properly. Our Enforcement Officers and Street Cleansing Teams are working hard to clear up rubbish and catch those responsible, but we’re also calling on our local communities to take a stand against fly-tipping by reporting it, and by helping us to identify culprits from our Redbridge Wall of Shame.”

Redbridge Wall of Shame features footage of people caught on camera dumping their trash on the borough’s streets. Since the site launched it has been empowering local people to join the fight against fly-tipping by reporting anyone they can identify from clips on the site.

Redbridge local, Elisa Piccaro, is a keen supporter of Redbridge Wall of Shame and thinks everyone has a role to play in keeping Redbridge clean and tidy.

The mum-of-one, from South Woodford, said: “It’s our neighbourhood. We need to take care of it as a community. It’s not just down to the Council. The problem is the people making the mess. There is so much education and information around getting rid of rubbish. Even if you just google it, lots of options come up so I don’t understand why people are leaving their rubbish on the street. It’s a really selfish thing to do.”

If you spot a fly-tip in the borough you can easily report it online through the council’s Report It page:   https://www.redbridge.gov.uk/report-it/

If you have video doorbell footage or photos of any fly tipping taking place you can upload images when you make your report.

All fly tips made known to the council are recorded and investigated, with enforcement action being taken if evidence is found. The council aims to clear all recorded fly-tips on council land and the highway within 24 hours of it being reported.

The Council also offers a Bulky Waste Collection Service entitling residents to a free collection every 12 months (maximum of 3 items). For more details, including costs for additional collections go to: www.redbridge.gov.uk/bins-waste-and-recycling/book-a-bulky-waste-or-large-item-collection/
