Our vision

By 2041, travel in Redbridge will be safer, healthier, greener and more inclusive.

There will be more affordable choices for all journeys that help us to live healthier and more independent lives. At least two thirds of all journeys will be by public transport, walking, wheeling (i.e. using wheelchairs and mobility scooters), cycling or scooting.

Our ambition is to create seamless and safe connections between the bus, underground and rail networks, and an extensive network of zero emission vehicle charging points that support the Borough’s carbon neutral ambitions with the aim to keep Redbridge moving.

Message from Jo Blackman, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability

“Redbridge is a diverse and thriving borough. The choices people make about how they travel have critical impacts on their health, safety and wellbeing. The decision about whether to take the bus, train, cycle, walk or using the car are defined by the transport opportunities available. These transport choices also have wider impacts on the economy, the environment, air pollution and wider climate.

This Sustainable Transport Strategy will guide our choices about where we invest, what we lobby other agencies for, how we cooperate across the Council and across borough boundaries. It aims to make our streets safer, vibrant, healthy, attractive and good for business.

Through this Strategy we will create a fairer transport system to keep Redbridge moving, that is fit for the future and enables everyone - young and old, people of all races, genders and walks of life, to all travel safely, independently and efficiently.”

Themes of the strategy

The strategy has four main themes with nine priorities that relate to improving road safety, improving active travel, improving accessibility, enhancing the environment and biodiversity, and making sure that we keep Redbridge moving.

Priority 1 Improving road safety and air quality - The transport network will address key safety issues that currently prevent individuals from making all travel choices, to create a safer environment for all road users.

Priority 2 Enabling healthy lifestyles - The transport network will make life easier for people of all ages and abilities who are living, working and visiting Redbridge and allow for independent active travel resulting in healthier lifestyles.

Priority 3 Enabling active travel - The transport network will offer attractive and low carbon alternatives to the private car through better integrated infrastructure, services and information provision, to encourage sustainable travel behaviour.

Priority 4 Education, promotion and engagement - Education will ensure that communities are informed of the benefits of safe and sustainable travel, and individuals are aware of the choices available. Schools and workplaces across the Borough will commit to promoting greener and safer forms of travel.

Priority 5 Increasing accessibility and creating high quality public realm - The transport network will enable individuals to access green spaces, community services and key destinations by sustainable travel options, encouraging active travel choices where possible and greater awareness of a healthy lifestyle.

Priority 6 Enhancing the environment and biodiversity - The transport network will minimise the negative impacts of transport to improve the quality of local environments and protect and enhance biodiversity across the borough.

Priority 7 Responding to the climate emergency - The transport network will help the Borough to achieve our goals of carbon neutrality by 2030 and carbon zero by 2050, by encouraging travel by greener and cleaner options where possible.

Priority 8 Supporting housing, jobs and economic growth - The transport network will connect people with places of employment and opportunity, allowing businesses to access supply chains within and beyond Redbridge, to help meet the needs of a growing borough and stimulate future prosperity.

Priority 9 Rethinking freight and servicing - The transport network will reduce the impact of delivery and servicing vehicles through better co-ordination and encouraging greener choices of transport for the first and last mile of journeys.

Timeline

The strategy has gone through numerous stages to get to the current stage, which is the public consultation stage.

You can read about the stages below and what comes next after the public consultation stage.

The Council gathered evidence on its transport network, highlighting strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities to be set out in a comprehensive evidence base report

The evidence base report was written and put into sections where data has highlighted any weaknesses and opportunities for the borough to consider in formulating its key themes and priorities.

The Council approached various groups and the Clean and Green Policy Development Committee to look at those strengths and opportunities and turn them into strategic actions.

The Council then developed a draft strategy taking into consideration all of the feedback and input from all sources.

This is one of the most critical steps in hearing your feedback on our individual actions and strategic themes within our strategy.

The Council will look to amend the strategy and incorporate feedback you and other stakeholders have given during the consultation phase.

The Council will formally adopt and publish the final strategy, looking to deliver and measuring that delivery on a regular basis.
